16V and VT TRE (Track Rods) Comparison And Wheel Bearings

Post by Gizmo »

Nabbed from CRX-UK!
robrex wrote:right, as i keep seeing loads of posts about people wanting vt track rod ends heres some pics showing the difference.

on the left is a vt tre and on the right a 16v tre (16v ones are longer and as such cant be fully adjusted to give the right alignment)

note the cut down bit, thats all thats different. so save some money and get the grinder out!

People do this and talk about grinding down the TRE.
Perhaps I'm being thick but I don't get it.

If you grind it down it makes it the same length as the VT one.

But then the treads inside must be the same depth once ground as a VT one?
So the problem is that you cannot wind it on to the bar from the steering at full length as it's too long and you run out of thread on the bar?

Else, you're are grinding down the TRE and the thread is not at the same depth so you now have less thread.
In which case, isn't grinding the length of the steering bar a better plan as there will be more thread in contact than grinding the TRE.

ok,

apon fitting the cut down 16v tre's, as mentioned above to get the full range of adjustment thats needed you need to trim alittle of the steering rack. i took alittle more of than is shown. i wound the bolt down to give you an idea off how much i took of but its alittle more than that.

for those who are worried, where the last kind of shinny bit of thread is (where the nut was before) is how far the tre screws up so theres loads of thread being used so it should be completely safe.

still i take no responsibility if you mess it up!

hope this helps some one

also for people interested in the VT bearings,

Dimensions of the VTEC bearing are:
Outside Diameter: 78mm
Inside Diameter: 42mm
Thickness measured across inner race: 41mm
Thickness measured across outer race: 31mm
It is a dual race with rubber seals.

Needed two, got one BRT1349 and one AKB1349 from Automotive Bearings Ltd (who seem to be linked with BRT somehow) from the local motor factors. Included in the kit is a driveshaft nut and circlip.

Both the bearings are actually made by Koyo in Japan and part number DAC4278CRS.

I had to do this recently to my CRX :-)

Works a treat £7.17 + Vat each from Eurocar parts just order 16v's and trim them down

Ok, so i will be cutting my 16v TRE's tomorrow morning, can someone confirm how much i should be taking off. Robrex said in a thread over on crxuk that i should take off 10mm. He also said that the rack should be trimmed, others didnt need to.

Best bet to cut off 10mm and see what im left with? Just dont want 10mm to be too much?

Cheers

Why are you trimming your TRE's :|

Fitting Vt brakes ?

Just try them first without cutting them, wind them on as far as they will go then judge it for yourself as to how much will need trimming off

Because you have to? lol

Finished fitting them this morning. The process we used was to cut the TRE 10mm then we cut the rack probably a total of about 20mm. Seems the rack was longer than most others, perhaps because it is a DX rack?

I'm now left with a small amount of toe out (enough though for it to feel weird!) will be getting it tracked tomorrow.

 i didnt know for definate that you were fitting VT brakes.

I think the racks are the same length as i fitted a VT rack to my Dx and the Gl TRE's fitted perfectly without any modification.

So if you hadn't cut the TRE's what would have happened ? run out of thread on the rack ?

what do you do if your fitting 16v tre's on a vt?
do you still need to cut a bit off the rack or just the TRE ?

I cut around 10mm off the tre. And about 5mm off the rack. Tracks fine

Do 16V rack end arms go on to a SiR/VT rack?
